About

Valerie Caña

I'm a product and UX designer currently pursuing my Master of Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. My work focuses on designing for complex systems, expert users, and high-stakes environments where clarity, trust, and human judgment matter most.

Right now, I'm contributing to a NASA-sponsored capstone exploring astronaut interfaces for future Mars missions — researching how crews and ground teams maintain shared situational awareness under communication delays and uncertainty. It's the kind of problem that captures what drives me: designing for moments where good information design isn't a nicety, but a necessity.

Before CMU, I worked as a Senior Visual Designer in fintech, designing B2B platforms, operational tooling, and healthcare-adjacent systems used by expert users and internal teams. I grew into product and UX work by recognizing where experiences were breaking down and taking ownership of fixing them — teaching myself interaction design, systems thinking, and product strategy, and evolving from visual design into building enterprise applications and the design systems that hold them together.

I'm especially interested in the intersection of HCI, AI-supported workflows, product strategy, and emerging technologies — designing experiences that support human trust and judgment rather than replace it.

Outside of work and school, I've led design communities, hosted workshops, and mentored designers through local UX and product design initiatives, because I believe good design culture is built together, not alone.
